What will you study?
Students will study a range of different texts: A Shakespeare play A post 1914 British play or novel A 19th century novel A collection of poems Students will gain an understanding of the lives of different authors, the historical setting, social and cultural contexts, the literary context of the text and the way in which texts were received by different audiences when they were written. Students will learn how to analyse poems by comparing language, structure, form and contextual features. Teaching focuses on the study of whole texts, developing students’ comprehension, critical reading and analytical skills, and their ability to write with clarity and coherence using accurate Standard English. Wider reading of literary texts is also encouraged to help students develop their skills.
How will you be assessed?
Students will sit their GCSE examination at the end of the two year programme. All students sit the same paper as there is no distinction between higher and foundation.
In English, students will sit two written examinations: paper 1 is 1 hr 45 mins and paper 2 is 2 hrs 15 mins. These papers each carry 50% of the overall grade. On each paper, students will answer essay based questions.
